How to approach Prelims Exam?

UPSC Preliminary Exam focusses on factual retention as well as conceptual understanding of the subject, along with a systematic and comprehensive approach. Though, every individual is different, here are some points which may help you in your preparation:

  1. Understand the Exam Pattern: Familiarize yourself with the exam pattern and syllabus of the UPSC Prelims. GS-I tests your knowledge of current affairs, history, geography, polity, economy and other subjects, while CSAT evaluates your aptitude and reasoning skills. Thoroughly go through the syllabus provided by UPSC for both GS-I and CSAT papers. Break down the syllabus into topics and sub-topics to create a structured study plan.
  2. Make a Study Plan: Create a realistic study plan based on the time available until the exam. Allocate time for each topic and subject, giving priority to areas that require more attention or are more challenging for you. Ensure a balanced approach by covering all subjects regularly.
  3. Current Affairs: Stay updated with current affairs from national and international news sources. Read newspapers, magazines, and online platforms to understand current events, government schemes, policies and developments in various fields.
  4. Stick to your Study Material: Collect relevant and reliable study material, including standard textbooks, reference books, newspapers, magazines, and online resources. Do not underestimate the importance of NCERT books for subjects like history, geography, economics, and polity. They provide a strong foundation and cover the basics required for the exam.
  5. Standard Reference Books: Use standard reference books recommended by experts for specific subjects. These books provide in-depth knowledge and help you grasp complex concepts. For e.g., M. Laxmikanth may be considered the bible of Indian Polity. Once you are satisfied with the book list, stick to it and do not waste your time reading multiple sources for the same topic.
  6. Practice Mock Tests: Regularly practice mock tests and previous year’s question papers to understand the exam pattern, improve time management, and assess your knowledge and preparation level. Analyze your performance and identify areas that need improvement.
  7. Revision and Consolidation: Regularly revise the topics you have covered to reinforce your learning. Create concise notes or mind maps to aid in quick revision. Pay attention to important dates, events, facts, and figures.
  8. CSAT Preparation: It is important to not be overconfident while preparing for CSAT. Many good students lose out on the opportunity to write the Mains exam because of their failure in CSAT. For the CSAT paper, focus on improving your aptitude and reasoning skills. Practice solving numerical ability, logical reasoning, data interpretation, and comprehension-based questions. There are specific books and online resources available for CSAT preparation.
  9. Stay Healthy and Positive: Maintain a healthy lifestyle by getting enough sleep, eating nutritious food, and exercising regularly. Take breaks during your study sessions to avoid burnout. Stay positive and motivated throughout your preparation journey.
  10. Seek Guidance: If possible, seek guidance from experienced mentors who can provide valuable insights, study strategies, and feedback on your preparation.

Remember, the UPSC Preliminary Exam requires a holistic approach, covering both static subjects and current affairs. Focus on conceptual clarity, critical thinking, and effective time management. Develop a disciplined study routine and be consistent in your efforts.
